West German Pottery Vase and Dish (Each)
So eloquently explained on "potsandpots.com", West German pottery was manufactured over a long enough period and by a number of factories that the range of colours, shapes and techniques in the pieces is marvelous! In the 1950s, the colours were more sedate and the forms smooth, while the 1960s were defined by loud colours; and then by the 1970s, fat lava glazes were all the rage. The handsome vase on sale today dates to the 1960s and is a gem from Bay Keramik. Despite its 50 odd-years, it's in magnificent condition! I especially love the generous size of the piece and the contrast of the green inner glaze against the brown, orange and cream design on the outside. In fact, the paintwork on the vase reminds me of African printwork, which must be another reason why I love this so much! The small dish/platter is most likely a mid-century piece by Dümler & Breiden. Decorated in brown, orange and brilliant gold, and finished with a bright yellow under-side and nifty little handles, it's a beautiful piece of German ceramic-ware. I'd probably keep this one on my dressing table as a sort-of vanity tray, but it would also make an excellent server for some wrapped chocolates after your next meal-time celebration.
